Abbots Ripton
Situated in the village of Abbots Ripton, part of Lord De Ramsey’s Huntingdon Estate, ARA completed 2 sites for residential development in partnership with County Homes on land released by the Estate to improve the housing supply in the village.
Contructed in the local vernacular style, water reed thatch and painted render with a yellow stock brick, the 2 schemes totalling 20 houses constructed over 2 years attracted 2 national ‘What House’ Sunday Times awards, and a conservation award from Huntingdon District Council. The construction methods used on this development in relation to thatch and minimising fire risk were eventually incorporated into the ‘Norfolk model’ which was adopted by the NHBC as their preferred construction method for thatched roofs.
